| SEM WORKS AMERICA E-NEWSLETTER, Volume 14, 2009 |
SEM America, vol. 14 is the second newsletter in a two-part series describing how an organization can be understood through four distinct systems operating in tandem with one another. In an article written in 2003 by Bolman & Deal (view article), they describe these four organizational frames as structural, political, human resource, and symbolic. Where last month’s e-newsletter took a look at the structural and political frames, this month’s e-newsletter offers articles as they relate to the human resource and symbolic frames.

HUMAN RESOURCE FRAME
|
In a paper (view PDF) written by Dr. Jim Black, CEO of SEMWORKS, he discusses the human resource frame and the importance of people in the enrollment equation. Most significant to this frame is employee development and learning, as well as the way that college positions are defined and redefined in an effort to create a "seamless" experience for the student.
Learning
- Three Types of Learning: This article discusses the different types of learning that might be found in the workplace, and the value of each to high performing organizations. Read more
- The Importance of Learning in Organizations: According to David Garvin and Amy Edmondson in this video clip (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUP4WcfNyAA&feature=related), learning organizations excel at two things; 1 - creating/acquiring information; and 2 - actively modifying behavior to respond new information. Garvin and Edmondson go on to discuss three building blocks of such an organization, including learning processes, the learning climate that makes these processes possible, and the importance of leadership in fostering such learning. SYMBOLIC FRAME
|
Unlike the rules and policies that drive certain frames of an organization, the symbolic frame is driven more by such things as ceremonies and rituals. The magic of the symbolic frame is in its ability to build trust in the workplace and cultivate morale on the job through such things as recognition techniques and effective leadership. Ceremony/Rituals
- Lessons from Mt. Everest: Stacy Allison, the first American woman to climb Mt. Everest understands the importance of creating connections among a group of people as part of building a team-oriented culture. In this short article (http://www.beyondthelimits.com/art_workplacerituals.shtml) she sheds light on some important culture-building strategies and why and how they can establish trust and bonding between those brought together to accomplish a significant purpose.
Trust
- The 4 C’s of Trust: In this short video John Spence spells out the 4 C’s of trust in an organization. He discusses the importance of both competence and concern in leaders as the underpinnings of building trust with anyone from superiors, to peers, to subordinates. To view this video, click here.
Recognition
- One of more under-appreciated groups in higher education is faculty. All of the promises made to incoming students by the college’s marketing and admissions departments must be shouldered by instructors as they work hard to deliver on those promises in the confines of the classroom. The public recognition of this eclectic cluster of teaching talent is growing in importance as faculty efforts are starting to be recognized as the heart and soul of educational institutions. To read a study done in the UK on this very subject, click here.
- Some examples of how institutions of higher learning are working to integrate and formalize faculty recognition and reward on their campuses, click on any one of these three links: Florida State University; Colorado Community College System; and Towson University.
Leadership
- Effective Communication: No matter what the organization, or the hierarchal structure, there can never be enough emphasis placed on the value of effective communication in the workplace. The three strategies proposed by this paper include managing meetings better and holding fewer of them; encouraging dissent and modeling clarity in communication; and listening to your team and your markets. To read about these three strategies in depth, click here.
- Desmond Tutu on Leadership: The Reverend Tutu discusses the importance of servant-ship in effective leadership as it reflects the leader’s intention to put the needs of something or someone(s) ahead of his or her own. As well, he talks about how good leaders "inspire" without having to coax followership. To listen to Desmond Tutu speak on this important subject, click here.
- Social Intelligence and Leadership: Daniel Goleman is considered by many to be the founder of emotional intelligence and its application in the workplace. In this video interview, Dr. Goleman makes the link between social intelligence and leadership and the new science of human relationships. To listen to Dr. Goleman discuss this subject, click here.
